A general overview is given of the progress made of using insects as food and feed, especially during the last five years. A lot of attention focusses on the black soldier fly to bio degrade and bio transform organic side streams. Insect strains are being developed to better perform. A lot of attention is giving to elucidating the environmental, nutritional and health benefits for humans and animals by consuming insects. New technological applications of food and feed products are being developed. Food safety issues receive a lot of attention, and this helps in obtaining conducive legislation. Strategies to overcome the reluctance of eating insects are being developed. This new agricultural sector is developing fast.
