SPIE Photonics Industry Update
Main Author: Stephen Anderson Organization: SPIE, United States The first in-depth profile of the world’s core optics and photonics industry was published by SPIE in 2013 and since then has been updated every two years, most recently at Photonics West 2018 last January. This profile of the world’s photonics components business is unique and based on detailed analysis of more than 3,000 components manufacturers in over 50 countries. The latest review of the industry based on actual sales performance and current trends with a projection for 2018 will be presented in this talk by Stephen Anderson, Director of Industry Development at SPIE. |

Some challenges and solutions for a typical Photonics startup
Main Author: George Atanasoff Organization: AccuStrata, Inc, United States Finding and focusing on a winning business strategy and market is essential for any startup company, but especially for the startup companies in Photonics, as this is one of the most rapidly changing business sector. During the last two decades Photonics has underwent significant transformations: first by innovation in laser and detectors, followed by the fiber optics, the miniaturization of spectrometers and CCD-type detectors, the implementation of new generation programmable micro-controllers, IoT, 3D printing, predictive analytics software and so on. The applications for Photonics also underwent many changes from optical communications, to photovoltaics, solid stare lighting, portable medical devices and wearables and so on. All this environment is very distractive for many Photonics startup companies. As a result many startups lost their focus pursuing multiple business opportunities or technical solutions and some startups ended in the sideways and gradually merged with the background. We will focus our presentation on the lessons learned by our startup company AccuStrata, as it also underwent significant transformations throughout the last several years. Creating a successful technology platform and backing it by well protected intellectual property was the key for AccuStrata's survival and success. The presentation with review the major business and technical challenges and the solutions the company has found during the last several years in its continuous strife for innovation and market success. |

Using Machine Learning Techniques to Examine the Photonics Industry Sector in Canada
Main Author: Stoyan Tanev Organization: Carleton University, Canada The paper summarizes the results from the application of machine learning techniques (topic modeling) to the exploration of the Canadian photonics industry sector. Topic models are algorithms for discovering the main themes that pervade large collections of textual documents. The research sample includes the photonics companies listed on the website of the Government of Canada: https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/ccc-rec.nsf/eng/home. The topic modeling approach was applied to the textual content of the Government websites pages describing each of the companies. The main result is the classification of the companies in terms of their specific photonics technologies and market offers. |

Board Edge Mount Active Optical Connector
Main Author: Pierre Cardinal Organization: Reflex Photonics Inc, Canada A novel VPX blind mate active optical Plug-in to Backplane connector for embedded communication systems is presented. The Plug-in printed-circuit board interface integrates a low-profile, rugged, 4+4 channels fiber optic transceiver operating at 10 Gbps per channel, over a temperature range from -40 to 85°C. |

Indoor Wireless Transmission of Uncompressed HD and 4K Videos Using Photonics Technologies
Main Author: Kathirvel Nallappan Organization: École Polytechnique de Montréal, Canada We present the design of photonics based Terahertz wireless communication system using all commercially available system components. The performance of the system is evaluated and live streaming of uncompressed HD and 4K videos in the indoor environment is demonstrated followed by the analysis of the link quality. |
